la film premiere: in search of a midnight kiss

followed by q&a w/ brian mcguire

7:00pm
location: grand 14 theater (2315 kaliste saloom road)

from emerging, award-winning filmmaker alex holdridge and the producer of before sunrise and dazed and confused, in search of a midnight kiss is a funny and bittersweet look at love, sex, and modern romance.
with an unsold script, no concrete plans, and a love life reduced to getting caught in compromising positions (alone!), a twenty-nine-year aspiring writer, wilson (scoot mcnairy) just had the worst year of his life. that is until his best friend, jacob (brian matthew mcguire), browbeats him into posting a personal ad for new year's eve on craig's list. when vivian (sara simmonds), a sexy, sarcastic, and seemingly blind-date-from-hell responds, the two strangers embark on an unexpected, chaotic, and hilariously awkward journey through the black-and-white streets of los angeles hoping to meet the right one before the stroke of midnight. a truly original love letter to los angeles, in search of a midnight kiss captures a lost downtown rarely seen on screen along with the hearts of critics and audiences alike.  www.insearchofamidnightkiss.com

reconstructing creole (56 minutes)
11:30am – 12:30pm
location: natural history museum (433 jefferson street)
directed by: jennifer john block

as restoration begins on laura plantation manor, the vivid memoir of its 19th century creole mistress offers a rare glimpse into louisiana's unique cultural history. the provocative film blends verite scenes with excerpts from the memoir to reveal a world of slavery and society balls, of race-mixing and family bonds, of cruelty, love, and joie de vivre. the french-speaking catholics refuse to mingle with les americains but they leave a legacy of race-blending unique to louisiana. the home was designed by a free man of color and it is evidence to the master craftsmanship of many west african slaves. reconstructing creole weaves past and present with music by 19th century creole composer louis moreau gottschalk, as well as original works from louisiana musicians bruce “sunpie” barnes, mitch caponetto, and adam kennedy. scenes include: a brick mason working on the restoration realizes “this is where my people are from.” an assistant plantation manager meets the 'black branch' of his family for the first time. former sharecroppers on the plantation describe what life was like for them. from laura's memoir, laura meets her mixed-race nephew at a st. louis society ball, prompting her to write the story of her life in louisiana. shot in 16:9 widescreen,.
